Figures of munitions transported by

the railway for the week ending 23rd October

show a return to normal after the surprising

figures of the previous week. After an

average of 500 tons a week they fell in the

previous week to 20 tons. The present

figure of 154 tons appears comparatively

satisfactory in view of the damage done to

the railway by air attack in the earlier part

of the week.

Copies of the telegram have

already been sent to the other Departments,

and no further action appears to be required.

The Chinese Government are now

investigating the possibility of importing

munitions by motor road via Burma.

I suggest that it might be advisable

to reply to the 0.A.G.'s telegram at 143 in

view of this letter, which agrees with the

feeling expressed here (see 147).
